Highway / Roadwork

  • MTO 2012-4007 - Ottawa Light Rail Transit Highway 417 Expansion

    Project Affiliates: Tomlinson Group, City of Ottawa
    Location: Ottawa, Ontario
    Description: Highway 417 widening, rehabilitation and rapid replacement of bridge structures and construction of a pedestrian overpass completed in conjunction with the Confederation LRT Line to reduce transit disruptions. Project required the development and implementation of an extensive vibration monitoring program for nearly a kilometre of critical underground municipal water mains.

    Parks Canada – Yoho Rock Slope Reprofiling

    Project Affiliates: ROCK Construction & Mining Inc., McCaw’s Drilling & Blasting Ltd., Parks Canada
    Location: National Park, British Columbia
    Description: Utilized drilling and blasting techniques, rock face stabilization and catchment excavation to reprofile a series of rock faces directly adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway to improve roadway safety.

    MTO 2015-5119 – Highway 69 Four Laning between Highway 522 and Highway 607

    Project Affiliates: Fraser Drill Blast Management Inc., J&P Leveque Bros., Ministry of Transportation
    Location: French River, Ontario
    Description: Widening a fourteen kilometer section of Highway 69 to four lanes. Constructing two new interchanges and 10 new bridges which required a drill and blast campaign to safely remove rock excavation quantities in excess of two million cubic meters.

    Kanata West Pump Station (KWPS) and Forcemains Project

    Project Affiliates: Taggart Construction, Doran Contractors Limited, M-Roc Ltd., City of Ottawa
    Location: Ottawa, Ontario
    Description: To respond to the rapid growth in Southwest Kanata, the KWPS project required construction of a new pump station, sanitary trunk sewer and over 3.5km of forcemain, much of which required rock excavation via urban drill and blast methods.

    Analysis of Proposed Highway 107 Extension 

    Project Affiliates: The Municipal Group of Companies, Halifax Regional Municipality
    Location: Bedford, Nova Scotia
    Description: The proposed alignment for an extension of Highway 107 presented significant operational impacts on the drilling and blasting program at an existing quarry. Explotech analyzed existing blast designs and their performance to evaluate the cost implications of modifying designs and operational guidelines to ensure the same margin of safety was maintained once the proposed highway extension shifted traffic significantly closer to the ongoing blasting.

Structure Excavation

  • Parliament Hill West Block Rehabilitation Project 

    Project Affiliates: PCL Construction, Dufresne Piling Company (1967), Marathon Underground Constructors, M-Roc Ltd., PWGSC
    Location: Ottawa, Ontario
    Description: In order to restore and modernize the historic 19th century Parliament Hill buildings, multifaceted blasting was completed inside the West Block Courtyard, the North Court and the tunnels directly underneath the existing foundation.

    Brockville General Hospital Phase II Rehabilitation Project 

    Project Affiliates: Ellisdon, Tomlinson Group, M-Roc Ltd., Brockville General Hospital
    Location: Brockville, Ontario
    Description: Mass excavation and construction of a new inpatient facility adjacent to the existing Brockville Hospital. Explotech completed an intricate vibration analysis to determine appropriate thresholds to ensure a zero-probability limit for negatively affecting the existing hospital structure and sensitive medical equipment (CT Scanners, X-Ray, etc.). The successful integration of drilling and blasting for the building excavation improved project duration compared to timelier mechanical methods.

    Claridge ICON Condominium Development 

    Project Affiliates: Claridge, Taggart Construction, M-Roc Ltd.
    Location: Ottawa, Ontario
    Description: One of Ottawa’s tallest structures, at forty-five storeys, required an urban drill and blast excavation program to construct a nine-storey below-grade parking structure directly adjacent to existing buildings.

    SaskPower Queen Elizabeth Repowering Project Piling Operations

    Project Affiliates: Force Pile Driving Inc., Alberici Constructors Ltd.
    Location: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
    Description: The construction of new facilities and conversion of three gas turbine generators into a combined cycle operation required an extensive hydraulic piling program on the Queen Elizabeth site. Given the significant amount of buried infrastructure throughout the power station, Explotech provided on-site vibration monitoring services to ensure all buried lines and facilities were identified and directly monitored for ground vibrations.

    22 rue Eddy Development

    Project Affiliates: Castonguay Blasting Ltd., Broccolini
    Location: Gatineau, Quebec
    Description: The fifteen storey Government of Canada building incorporated an existing 1907 historic structure on the Canadian Register into its unique building design. Accordingly, sensitive urban drill and blast methods were necessary to excavate directly adjacent to the Hôtel Bank while ensuring no damage was caused to the existing historic structure.

  • Coastal GasLink Pipeline Project

    Project Affiliates: TC Energy, Glacier Blasting & Shoring Ltd.
    Location: Kitimat, British Columbia
    Description: The 670-kilometre pipeline project, starting in Kitimat and ending in the Dawson Creek area, will deliver natural gas across Northern British Columbia. Explotech was engaged to prepare blasting specifications at the design stage then monitor vibrations and overpressure once work commenced.

    Undetonated Explosives (Remnant Explosives) Extraction Services

    Location: Various locations in Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia
    Description: Remnant explosive discovery in bootlegs or overburden, originating from previous construction operations, requires our experts to assess potential hazards, safely extract any undetonated materials, and transport the materials under an NRCan license for secure disposal or destruction.

    Description: For an extensive number of corporations, partnerships and specific pipeline projects, Explotech has drafted specifications for rock excavation via drill and blasting methods for the majority of pipeline jobs over the past 40 years.

    TMX Anchor Loop Project

    Project Affiliates: Kinder Morgan Canada Limited, McCaw’s Drilling & Blasting Ltd., North American Construction
    Location: Jasper, Alberta
    Description: The twinning of a 158km section of the existing Trans Mountain system between Hinton, Alberta and Hargreaves, British Columbia. This involved drill and blasting through Jasper National Park and Mount Robson Provincial Park, both designated part of the Canadian Rocky Mountains Parks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    Southern Crossing Natural Gas Project

    Description: Construction of a 310km major loop of natural gas pipeline from Yahk to Oliver that required an extensive drill and blast campaign.

  • Bruce Nuclear Generating Station – Bruce Heavy Water Plant Decommissioning Project

    Description: The explosive felling of a 100m tall steam plant stack inside the OPG Bruce Nuclear Power Plant surrounded by a number of sensitive structures.

    Frank Clair Stadium Lower South Side Stands Demolition Project

    Description: The explosive demolition of a 100m long stadium seating structure surrounded by adjacent stadium buildings.

    Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) Chalk River Facility – Water Tower Demolition

    Project Affiliates: Controlled Demolition Inc., Canadian Nuclear Laboratories
    Location: Chalk River, Ontario
    Description: The explosive felling of a 75 year old, 360,000 liter water tank supported by six steel support legs. The existing structure was located within 300m of the nuclear reactor facility at CNL Chalk River.

    Lakeview Power Generation Station Demolition

    Project Affiliates: Murray Demolition LP, Dykon Explosives Demolition Inc., Ontario Power Generation
    Location: Mississauga, Ontario
    Description: The explosive felling of the “Four Sisters" (four adjacent 150m tall stacks) followed by the explosive demolition of the remaining generating structure. At the time, this was the largest explosively demolished structure in North America, and the tallest explosively demolished towers in Canada.

    Pitt River South Bridge Decommissioning - Bridge Pier Demolition

    Location: Port Coquitlam, British Columbia
    Description: Following construction of the new Highway 7 cable-stayed bridge spanning the Pitt River, five of the nine original un-reinforced concrete bridge piers required demolition via explosive means.

  • City of Ottawa Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST)

    Project Affiliates: Dragados-Tomlinson Joint Venture, Marathon Underground Constructors, City of Ottawa
    Location: Ottawa, Ontario
    Description: Construction of two bored tunnels, totaling 6km in length, with nine surface sites throughout downtown Ottawa.

    Halifax Harbour Solutions Cleanup – Collection System Tunnel

    Project Affiliates: McNally Construction Inc.
    Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
    Description: One of the largest municipal infrastructure project ever completed in Atlantic Canada, the harbour cleanup required explosive blasting to excavate shafts and a collection system tunnel through downtown Halifax and in close proximity to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

    Ottawa Light Rail Transit (OLRT) Project Phase 1 – East and West Tunnel Portals

    Project Affiliates: OLRT Constructors, Dufresne Piling Company (1967), M-Roc Ltd., City of Ottawa
    Location: Ottawa, Ontario
    Description: In preparation for the 2.5km tunnel excavation through downtown Ottawa, the excavation for the East and West Tunnel Portals required a multifaceted operation of drill and blast excavation, mechanical rock excavation, piling and shoring in two downtown locations.

    Musselwhite Mine #2 Shaft Excavation

    Project Affiliates: Goldcorp, Sacchetti Construction Ltd.
    Location: Musselwhite, Ontario
    Description: The rock excavation of a 9m shaft via explosives blasting within an existing 12m caisson wall at the remote Musselwhite Mine required careful design controls and vibration monitoring to ensure no adverse effects were initiated on the caisson wall.

    Sudbury South End Rock Tunnel Project

    Project Affiliates: McNally Construction Inc.
    Location: Bedford, Nova Scotia
    Description: Insufficient sewer capacity in the south end of Sudbury caused local basement flooding and sewage overflows into local watercourses. This lead to the planning, excavation and construction of a 6.5km long rock tunnel sewer system, blasted through bedrock more than 25 metres below the surface.

Quarrying & Mining

  • GMS WAC Bennett Dam Riprap Upgrade Project – Sand Flat Quarry

    Project Affiliates: BC Hydro, Kiewit Corporation, McCaw’s Drilling & Blasting Ltd
    Location: Hudson’s Hope, British Columbia
    Description: In a remote mountain location, the Sand Flat Quarry was established to produce a gradation of riprap products necessary to upgrade the upstream side of the WAC Bennett Dam. Acting as the blast consultant on behalf of BC Hydro, Explotech assisted with blast designs, reviews and modifications to ensure that riprap yields were maximized throughout the life of the quarry.

    Rankin Itivia Quarry Development

    Project Affiliates: Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd., Nuna Logistics Partnership, Glacier Blasting & Shoring Ltd.
    Location: Rankin Inlet, Nunavut
    Description: The Itivia Quarry was a multi-phase infrastructure development project that required the establishment of a tank farm and laydown yard and reviving a granite quarry adjacent to critical structures including an airport, department of defense structures, and local residences. On behalf of the owner, Explotech peer reviewed all blast documentation, performed inspections and facilitated a long-term vibration monitoring program to withstand he Northern climate conditions.

    Blast Impact Assessment for Fort Smith and Fort Resolution Quarries

    Description: Prospected as possible aggregate material sources for future Government of Northwest Territories Infrastructure projects, Explotech completed comprehensive analyses of viable blast designs and associated environmental considerations for the Fort Smith and Fort Resolution quarries.

    Rainy River Gold Mine Development

  • Pointe du Bois Generating Station Modernization Project

    Description: Mass excavation through a combination of land and marine based drill and blast methodologies to establish a new spillway, discharge channel and approach channel. Explotech served as the designated project blast consultant for the four years of drilling and blasting.

    “A Jetty” Upgrade Project at CFB Esquimalt

    Description: Completed a detailed conceptual review of potential marine blast design options, necessary blasting procedures, safety considerations and environmental impact and necessary mitigation considerations for future marine blasting required in the Esquimalt Harbour.

    Jetty NJ Development at CFB Halifax

    Description: Barge mounted drill and blast marine operations to construct a 247m long Jetty on CFB Halifax situated at the base of the Angus L. McDonald Bridge. Operations had unique environmental marine blasting considerations and strict vibration controls for the CFB Halifax base and bridge structure.

    Keeyask Generating Station

    Location: Northern Manitoba
    Description: The construction of a 695MW hydroelectric generating station required millions of cubic meters of rock excavation via drill and blast methodologies to construct the powerhouse, spillway and other river management structures. Throughout the project, Explotech has provided both Manitoba Hydro and BBE Hydro Constructors LP with tailored blast consulting services.

    Lower Churchill Project – Muskrat Falls Generating Project

    Description: Construction of a greenfield hydroelectric facility consisting of a powerhouse, spillway and various dams that required mass excavation through a combination of land and marine based drill and blast methodologies.   • Pipeline Training Program on Blasting and Remnant Explosive Removals

    Description: Developed and provided custom safety course intended to train and test pipeline workers on the basics of blasting principles, the discovery and detection of remnant explosives, and the explosive extraction and disposal process.

    Description: Designed and presented routine information sessions for City of Ottawa employees on a widespread range of blasting information topics including applicable regulations, explosive product information, blast design fundamentals, potential hazards, environmental considerations and public relations.

    Engineers Professional Development Day

    Location: Toronto, Ontario
    Description: Designed and provided a refresher course for Ministry personnel on the basics of blasting and blasting derivatives, measuring the various necessary effects of blasts, human response and maintaining good public awareness.

    Seismograph Field Practice Training Program
